Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare Supplement Plans:
What Is A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan?
A Medicare Supplement plan, also known as Medigap, is a policy offered by private insurance companies that helps cover some of the out-of-pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. These plans work alongside your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage.
How Is A Medicare Supplement Plan Different From Medicare Advantage?
A Medicare Supplement plan works with Original Medicare and allows you to see any provider that accepts Medicare nationwide. Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative to Original Medicare and often use provider networks. Medigap plans typically offer more predictable out-of-pocket costs, while Medicare Advantage plans may include additional benefits but have network restrictions.

What Do Medicare Supplement Plans Typically Cover?
Depending on the plan you choose, Medicare Supplement plans may help cover:
• Medicare Part A hospital deductible
• Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments
• Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
• Foreign travel emergency coverage (on certain plans)
Each plan type (such as Plan G or Plan N) offers a standardized set of benefits.
When Is The Best Time To Enroll In A Medicare Supplement Plan?
The best time to enroll is during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period, which begins when you are both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, you can enroll without medical underwriting, meaning you cannot be denied coverage based on health.
You are still eligible to apply for and potentially enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan after your initial Medicare enrollment, however, you will likely need to go through some additional medical underwriting. Only “low risk” applicants who can pass underwriting will be eligible to enroll.
