Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare Advantage Plans:

A Medicare Advantage plan is a type of Medicare health plan offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. These plans provide all of your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage, and many plans also include additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, or hearing services.

Original Medicare is coverage provided directly through the federal government. A Medicare Advantage plan is offered through a private insurance company approved by Medicare. While Medicare Advantage plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers, they may have different provider networks, costs, and additional benefits.

You can typically enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during certain enrollment periods, including:

• Your Initial Enrollment Period when you first become eligible for Medicare
• The Annual Election Period (October 15 – December 7)
• The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) if you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan

Special Enrollment Periods may also be available depending on your situation.

Many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, often called MAPD plans. However, not all plans include drug coverage, so it’s important to review the details of each plan to determine whether prescription benefits are included.

Many Medicare Advantage plans use provider networks such as HMO or PPO networks. This means you may need to see doctors and hospitals that participate in the plan’s network. Before enrolling, it’s important to check whether your preferred doctors, specialists, and hospitals participate in the plan.
